Opening timber shutters
Traditional timber shutters with Beematic RHA automation. Carefully proportioned leaves swing out from the window surround, with mains-powered or RHA Plug-In rechargeable operation specified to suit the installation.

A familiar form, carefully worked out
Opening shutters need enough room to swing and a reliable way to hold them in the intended position. We consider the reveal, sill, hinge offset and surrounding wall together, so the movement is resolved before the timber is made.
Leaf proportions
A single leaf or a pair can be considered to suit the window. Frame widths and infill are balanced with the size of the opening.
Hinges & retention
Hinge positions, supporting fixings, stays and hold-open hardware are selected for the leaf and site. A motor is not a substitute for a specified lock.
Timber & colour
Discuss louvred or solid-panel styling, a painted colour or a finish that shows the timber. The material and coating specification is agreed for the application.
Your opening-shutter specification
Leaves & finish
Size: made to measure, with one or two leaves assessed for the opening.
Construction: framed timber with the agreed infill and proportions.
Material: species and sections selected for appearance, exposure and hardware compatibility.
Finish: colour, coating and care requirements recorded in the quotation.
Swing & hardware
Movement: outward swing, with the usable opening angle confirmed for the site.
Hinges: offset and fixing positions selected for the reveal and leaf weight.
Retention: hold-open, closing and locking arrangements agreed separately.
Operation: Beematic RHA or RHA Plug-In; dimensions, weight, arm geometry and power provision are confirmed for the complete system.
Beematic RHA automation
We specify Beematic RHA for powered hinged shutters. Compact 12 V DC motors sit in an aluminium head unit and operate the leaves through matched arms and guides. The linkage is selected around the hinge position, reveal and available clearance.

1 · Discreet head unit
The aluminium housing sits near the head of the opening. Its length, mounting arrangement and finish are selected to suit the window.
2 · Matched arms & guides
The RHAG family provides linkage arrangements for different reveals and shutter layouts. The correct set is selected from the actual hinge geometry.
3 · Hinged timber leaves
We agree the timber, infill, finish and proportions with you, then confirm the opening angle, weight and fixing requirements before manufacture.
4 · Mains or battery
Standard RHA uses an RHA2 mains-fed controller. RHA Plug-In uses rechargeable batteries and an RHA2 POWER controller instead.
RHA manufacturer technical data
| System | Beematic RHA1 actuators with RHA2 controller |
| Catalogue leaf capacity | Up to 30 kg per leaf; 60 kg total for two leaves |
| Motor supply / current | 12 V DC / 1.4 A |
| Controller mains input | 230 V AC, 50–60 Hz |
| Output torque | 35 Nm |
| Nominal travel time | 12 seconds through 180° as listed by the manufacturer; actual usable angle depends on the installation |
| Duty | Class 2, light duty. S2: 7 minutes; S3: 15%. |
| Operating temperature | −20°C to +55°C |
| Protection | IP44 with the aluminium profile/enclosure fitted |
| Housing section drawing | 70 mm wide × 52 mm housing height; 76 mm overall shown with the mechanism. Extra linkage and installation clearances must be checked. |
| Controls | Integrated 433 MHz receiver; local and centralised opening/closing commands |
| Obstacle detection | Electronic detection is listed for RHA2; commissioning is specific to the installation |
Catalogue capacities are upper limits for the mechanism. Leaf dimensions, wind exposure, hinges, arm geometry, opening angle and substrate can require a lower working limit. We confirm the complete specification before manufacture.
RHA Plug-In: rechargeable battery & solar option
RHA Plug-In is the battery-powered hinged-shutter system in this catalogue. It uses an RHA2 POWER controller and a 6,400 mAh rechargeable lithium battery pack, with 12 V DC motor output.
Beematic gives an indicative charging interval of around six months, depending on leaf weight and the number of operations. This is not a guaranteed interval for every installation. A compatible charger and charging access are included in the agreed specification.
RHAPS charger: catalogue code APE-150/4488, 12 V / 5 A.
Optional RHASUN solar panel: catalogue code APE-150/4490, 10 W, 553 × 60 × 10 mm. Solar charging can extend the interval between recharges; suitability depends on position and exposure.
Battery, charger, solar-panel availability and the intended controls are confirmed when quoting. Unapproved accessories must not be powered from the battery. The Plug-In option is for hinged shutters, not the SHU sliding system.
Arms, finishes & control options
Linkage: RHAG is an adjustable arm/guide kit; RHAG0 is the zero-projection arrangement; RHAG2 is listed for a split leaf with a supporting guide. Other linkage sets are available for particular folding or reveal geometries. Selection follows the manufacturer’s dimensions, not a one-size-fits-all arm.
Housing finishes: the catalogue includes white, anodised aluminium, green RAL 6005, brown RAL 8017 and black RAL 9005 options. Availability and any custom-colour requirements are checked separately from the finish on the timber shutters.
Controls: WALL2 wall controls, the HOME six-channel handset and compatible centralised or home-automation arrangements can be specified. Optional sensors and locking hardware are agreed separately; a powered shutter is not automatically a security-rated shutter.

From your first sketch to the finished joinery
01 · Share the space
Send photographs, approximate dimensions and your postcode. Tell us which windows you want to cover and how you would like the shutters to move.
02 · Agree the details
We work through the layout, materials, finish and hardware, then set out the scope and price in a written quotation. Final dimensions and technical details are confirmed before manufacture.
03 · Make and supply
Your joinery is made to the agreed design. Supply-only orders can be delivered wherever required, with delivery priced for the destination. Ask us about fitting; availability depends on location and scope.
For payment stages, measuring visits and delivery arrangements, see ordering and payment.
Questions about opening shutters
Can you match a traditional appearance?
We can work from your photographs and preferred proportions to develop a suitable timber design. Exact profiles, infill and finish are agreed before manufacture. If the property is listed or otherwise restricted, obtain any required permissions before ordering.
Can existing shutters be automated?
Possibly, but the condition, weight, hinges, clearances and fixing substrate need assessment. We will not promise a retrofit from photographs alone; the proposed mechanism must suit the complete installation.
Are opening shutters security shutters?
These are bespoke timber shutters. A security rating is not implied by the timber design or powered operation. Tell us if locking is important so the hardware and any evidence required can be discussed explicitly.
Joinery made around your requirements
JM Joinery has been working from Herefordshire since 2000. We combine workshop craftsmanship with drawing and CNC capability to turn a practical brief into carefully made joinery.
A clear specification before we make it
Your quotation confirms what is included: materials, finish, hardware, delivery and any agreed fitting. Our two-year guarantee and care terms explain the cover and ongoing maintenance responsibilities.
