Timber gates: privacy, proportion and access

Made-to-measure timber gates — JM Joinery

These boarded timber gates have a simple, substantial appearance. The closely spaced boards keep the entrance visually enclosed, while the shape of the top gives the pair their outline.

Think about daily access

A gate is used as well as viewed. Think about pedestrians, deliveries and the vehicles that regularly come through. A photograph with the gates open can be as helpful as one taken from the road.

Ground levels and the available swing space affect the options. Include the posts or pillars, the surface of the driveway and anything close to the opening in the information you send. If automation is being considered, mention it at the start so the gate and operating equipment can be coordinated.

Choose the amount of screening

The height and amount of screening are design choices too. A more enclosed entrance feels different from an open arrangement; the right balance depends on the setting and the privacy you want.
