The circular dormer windows pictured here are a reminder that a timber window need not begin with a rectangular opening. Their white frames stand out against the slate, while the repeated shape ties the roof together.
Start with the opening
A shaped window starts with the building around it. The outline of the opening, the depth of the reveal and the position of any glazing bars all affect the finished appearance. Photographs taken from outside and inside are useful, especially where an existing window is being replaced.
It is also worth deciding early whether the window needs to open, how it will be reached for cleaning and what you want to see through it. Those practical details belong in the brief alongside the shape and colour.
Bring us the shape you have
If you have an unusual opening, send a photograph, a sketch and approximate dimensions. We can discuss the approach before the final specification and manufacturing measurements are agreed.
